Abstract
302,306. Soc. d'Etudes MiniÞres et Industrielles. Dec. 14, 1927, [Convention date]. Nitrogen; hydrogen.-Nitrogen or hydrogen or mixtures thereof for ammonia synthesis are purified from oxygen and from oxidizable impurities, such as carbon monoxide and acetylene and other hydrocarbons, and reducible impurities, such as sulphur and phosphorus compounds, by passing the gases at a temperature which, except in the case of nitrogen, must not exceed 600‹ C., over charcoal, e.g. wood charcoal. A small quantity of water vapour must be present in the gases and pressure may be employed in the reaction. Oxygen or air or hydrogen may be added, when necessary, with the gases before the treatment in quantities sufficient to ensure removal of the impurities. The conversion products of the impurities are removed by any suitable process .carbon dioxide being for example removed by caustic soda or potash, and sulphuretted hydrogen and phosphine by adsorption in chromic acid.
