Abstract
Gases to be used for catalytic processes, such as burner gases for use in the catalytic production of sulphuric acid, are purified from traces of finely divided inorganic solids by the use of activated carbon or charcoal, of high adsorbing or decolorizing power, prepared for example as described in Specification 10126/14, [Class 90, Non-metallic elements]. The solids may in some cases be enveloped in liquid particles or liquid clouds. The purification may be combined with the formation in the gas of a condensation product, which may be effected in the filter chamber. For example, in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, gases containing steam and sulphur trioxide may be caused to deposit sulphuric acid on the carbon by maintaining the filter chamber at a suitable temperature. A suitable concentration of steam may be maintained for the purpose.
