Abstract

Gases containing phosphorus vapour evolved in the production of phosphorus in an electric furnace are passed through an electric dust precipitator, maintained at a sufficiently high temperature to prevent deposition of the phosphorus before the latter is condensed under water. A sludge formed in the condenser from the dust carried by the gas stream and which contains adsorbed phosphorus is thus avoided. By admitting air, after the removal of the dust the phosphorus may be burned to produce the pentoxide which may be allowed to react with water to give phosphoric acid.
