Abstract

235,844. New Jersey Zinc Co., (Assignees of Breyer, F. G., and Bunce, E. H.). June 17, 1924, [Convention date]. Zinc oxide.-In the manufacture of zinc oxide by the retort volatilizing process sulphur trioxide is associated with the fume resulting from the oxidation of metallic zinc vapour, to form white compounds with impurities such as lead and cadmium in the fume. Sulphuric acid mist and gaseous mixtures containing sulphur trioxide may be used. The zinc is volatilized under non-oxidizing conditions in a retort 5 and the zinc vapour passes into an oxidizing atmosphere maintained by a current of air in the flue 6. The sulphur trioxide may be introduced by a main 7 and distributing pipes 8 into the oxidizing chamber 6 or through the conduits 9 for conducting producer gas, or directly into the retort 5, or into the settling chambers or the reheating apparatus in which the zinc oxide is heated in upright retorts to a temperature of 450‹-700‹ C. and then is passed into large trays or an insulated hopper maintained above 450‹ C.
