Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of steel and the fixation of nitrogen, molten iron in a converter is subjected to an air blast to remove most or all of the silicon present and then the air blast is cut off and nitrogen blown in thus removing the carbon in the form of cyanogen compounds, such as cyanogen or hydrocyanic acid, which pass off with the gases from the converter and are removed therefrom by treating with steam to form ammonia compounds or converting into nitric acid. To assist the reaction, a basic element, such as an alkali metal in vapour form, or hydrogen is introduced with the nitrogen, the sulphur and phosphorus present as impurities in the iron being also removed. Instead of nitrogen producer gas or any gas containing nitrogen and hydrogen as its main constituents may be used but in this case the alkali metal is not used.
