16,504. Woltereck, H. C. July 26. Ammonia; ammonium sulphate. -Ammonia is produced by passing a stream of air and steam through peat at a temperature of about 350-450‹ C.; the process will also work if the temperature is somewhat above or below these limits. The peat is contained preferably in vertical retorts, and the requisite temperature is maintained by the beat of combustion of the carbon of the peat. The reaction may be started by external heat, or by the heat of the steam and air which are admitted. There is practically no inflammable gas evolved. The gases produced are passed through scrubbers, and then through alkali to liberate any combined ammonia, and the ammonia is finally absorbed in sulphuric acid in a suitable tower, the acid being kept at a sufficient temperature to prevent too much water from condensing, which would make the solution of ammonium sulphate too dilute.
