Abstract
Gases rich in hydrogen sulphide containing both ammonia and carbon dioxide impurities are purified and rendered suitable for the production of sulphur or sulphuric acid by washing the gases with water to remove ammonia and carbon dioxide, passing air or an inert gas through the aqueous liquor obtained and returning the air or inert gas with desorbed hydrogen sulphide to the washing stage. The gases treated may be those resulting from the treatment of gas washing liquors with steam, consisting of hydrogen sulphide carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide, after treatment as in Specification 695,496 to convert the hydrogen cyanide to ammonia. In an example, such a gas mixture, cooled to 240 DEG C. is passed to a bubble-cap column containing 10 plates, the gas inlet being between the second and third plates from the bottom. Water at 15 DEG C. is passed to the top of the column and air is passed into the base of the column to strip the hydrogen sulphide from the liquor passing over the plates below the gas inlet. A mixture of air and hydrogen sulphide is withdrawn at the top. The liquor withdrawn from the bottom of the column may be added to the ammoniacal liquor of a coal gas purification system.
