Abstract

Hydrogen sulphide is removed from a gaseous mixture and converted into sulphur by passing the mixture through a solution of 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid or a salt thereof. Solutions of the sulphonic acid in water or in a homogeneous or two-phase mixture of water and an organic solvent may be employed, and improved results are obtained if the solution is rendered alkaline and buffered to a pH of 8-10, and also contains a dispersing agent, e.g. an alkylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate. The process is carried out batchwise or continuously at temperatures between 0 DEG C., and 100 DEG C. in scrubbing towers or rapidly agitated vessels, the sulphur being removed by filtration. The solution may be regenerated by passage of oxygen or air through the solution, preferably at the same time as the gas to be treated.ALSO:Hydrogen sulphide is removed from a gaseous mixture, e.g. coal gas, fuel gas, synthetic gases or natural gases, and converted into sulphur by passing the mixture through a solution of 1,2 - naphthoquinone - 4 - sulphonic acid or a salt thereof. Solutions of the sulphonic acid or salt in water or in mixtures of water and an organic solvent may be employed, and the pH is preferably maintained at 8-10. The process is carried out at 0-100 DEG C. in scrubbing towers or rapidly agitated vessels, batchwise or continuously. Regeneration of the solution may be effected by mixing oxygen or air with the gas to be treated.
