Abstract

SO2 is recovered from gases by contacting with an aqueous solution of glyoxal at below 50 DEG C., e.g. 15 DEG -30 DEG C., and subsequently heating at above 50 DEG C., e.g. 65 DEG -75 DEG C. The gas may contain 6-20% SO2 with air, CO2, HCl, SO3, or hydrocarbons. The solution may contain 1-60% glyoxal and should be cooled during contact. It is advantageous not to completely exhaust SO2 from the solution during heating and the process may be cyclic. 1,2-Dihydroxy-1,2-ethane disulphonic acid is stated to be formed in the solution and decomposed.
