Abstract

Carbon dioxide is separated from a gaseous mixture by absorbing into an aqueous solution of an ethanolamine at atmospheric or higher pressure followed by desorption of the carbon dioxide from solution at a pressure below atmospheric. The absorption pressure is preferably 1-6 atmospheres and the desorption pressure preferably 500-30 mm. mercury absolute. The ethanolamine solution is preferably of 2-4 molar concentration and may also contain potassium carbonate. Gases which may be treated are flue gases and gases obtained from fermentation processes or lime kilns. The gas mixture may be given a preliminary treatment with dilute alkali to remove dust and sulphur dioxide and to cool the gas. Absorption and desorption may take place in towers packed with coke, the gas from the desorber being compressed and passed in heat exchange with the desorbed solution which is then recycled to the absorber. Examples describe the treatment of gases containing 10-60 per cent carbon dioxide with solutions of monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, and triethanolamine. The Provisional Specification refers to the removal of hydrogen sulphide from gas mixtures by a similar process.
