Abstract

A process for removing carbon dioxide from ammonia-synthesis gas mixtures comprises contacting said gas mixture in an absorber with a hot aqueous solution of potassium carbonate, passing the unreacted gases to a compressor, compressing said unreacted gases to a higher pressure, contacting the recompressed gases with a hot alkali carbonate solution in a second absorber to remove substantially all of the remaining carbon dioxide from the gas mixture and regenerating the spent scrubbing solution for recycle by letting down the solution to substantially atmospheric pressure while maintaining the temperature of said solution constant. The fresh potassium carbonate scrubbing solution may be delivered to each of the absorbers directly from the regeneration step or alternatively the scrubbing solution from the regeneration may be delivered to the second absorber and thereafter to the first absorber before being returned to the regeneration step.
