Abstract

<PICT:0886346/III/1> CO2 is recovered from solutions of alkali metal, or ammonium, carbonates, phosphates, borates, or phenates activated by the presence of arsenious anhydride, which have been employed to absorb the CO2 from gas mixtures, by treating the solution at higher temperature with inert gas (including air), or by the steam inherently generated, at super-atmospheric pressure, the temperatures being above the boiling point of the solution at atmospheric pressure. Gases containing CO2 are contacted with the absorption solution in absorber 1 which may be operated at elevated temperatures or pressures, if desired. The exhausted solution is removed from the bottom of the tower and passed through heat-exchanger 2 into regeneration tower 3. Regeneration is carried out at superatmospheric pressure by heating the solution, e.g. to 180 DEG C., by steam coil 4. Expelled CO2 issues from the tower at 5, and regenerated solution passes from the bottom of the tower through heat-exchanger 2, and is recycled thence through water cooler 6 to absorption tower 1 by pump 7. Coal gas or N2/H2 mixtures may be used as desorption gases. Specifications 798,856 and 857,960 are referred to.
