Abstract
Waste air from viscose plants containing less than 0.1 per cent hydrogen sulphide is purified by bringing the gases continuously into contact with ferric hydroxide, e.g. bog iron ore, and continuously passing off substantially non-poisonous non-malodorous gas. The waste gases may be blown with steam to ensure the presence of at least 6 mols. of water to every 4 mols, ferric hydroxide. The waste gases at a linear velocity of at least 1.5 cms/sec. are passed through at least two known absorption towers in series until the contact mass in the first tower contains 55 per cent sulphur. The sulphur is extracted by carbon disulphide and the towers are then reversed so that the gases alway pass first through a tower which has absorbed some sulphur. The absorption is preferably carried out in alkaline medium e.g. by addition of ammonia to the gases or solid or dissolved caustic lime or sodium hydroxide to the contact mass. The gases may be further treated with a finely dispersed absorbent such as activated carbon or silica gel, or with ozone.
