Abstract

1385719 Purification of exhaust gases HITACHI Ltd 27 July 1972 [6 Aug 1971] 35219/72 Heading ClA Exhaust gas containing a noxious substance such as SO 2 or NO 2 is reacted with an absorption solution to absorb the noxious substance, converting the noxious substance into an innocuous substance, and bringing at least part of the resultant mixture into direct contact with the entering exhaust gas stream in order to cool the exhaust gas and form a solid substance from the mixture. The absorption solution may be aqueous sodium sulphite possibly containing caustic soda which has been recovered after reaction of caustic soda with SO 2 . In the drying tower the heat of the flue gas evaporates water from the solution leaving a fine powdery Na 2 SO 3 product which may be recovered. The cooled gas is passed to an absorbing tower where it is contacted with an absorption solution containing NaOH or Na 2 SO 3 . The spent absorbent may be circulated to the drying tower or caustic soda may be added to it to convert any NaHSO 3 present into Na 2 SO 3 . Nitrogen oxides present in the waste gas may be converted by NaOH into sodium nitrate or by Na 2 SO 3 into sodium sulphate. Alternatively part of the spent absorbent may be reacted with slaked lime or CaO (as powder or slurry) to form calcium sulphate or calcium sulphite.
