Abstract

Sulphur-cpd. contaminated effluent from the Claus process is treated with >=70 stoichiometric amt. H2 reqd. for complete conversion to H2S, prior to catalytic hydrogenation at 146-649 degrees C. The treated stream is cooled to at least the dew pt. temp. of water, and then contacted with absorbents to remove H2S and convert it to elemental sulphur. The process can be applied to large scale plants producing >=3000 tonnes/day sulphurous gas, and greatly reduces the usual loss of 3-5% S in untreated effluent.
