Abstract

Carbon dioxide produced by fermentation is freed from impurities such as fusel alcohols, thioethers, mercaptans, disulphides, hydrogen sulphide, skatole and cadaverine by bringing the gases into contact with a solution of formaldehyde in sulphuric acid, substantially free of water. The gas-washing liquid may be prepared by introducing gaseous formaldehyde into concentrated sulphuric acid or by dissolving solid para-formaldehyde in concentrated sulphuric acid. Sulphur dioxide contaminant may be removed by a prior passage of the gas through a tower containing wetted limestone and after treatment with the formaldehyde sulphuric acid mixture the gas may be passed through a further scrubber containing concentrated sulphuric acid to remove traces of formaldehyde. If the latter purification step is admitted the gas contains small quantities of formaldehyde or its oxidation product, formic acid, and this gas may be used in the production of dry ice or in the production of Seltzer water.ALSO:Gases produced by fermentation are freed from impurities such as fusel alcohols, thioethers, mercaptans, disulphides, hydrogen sulphide, skatole and cadaverine by bringing the gases into contact with a solution of formaldehyde in sulphuric acid, substantially free of water. The process is particularly applicable to carbon dioxide. The gas washing liquid may be prepared by introducing gaseous formaldehyde into concentrated sulphuric acid or by dissolving solid para-formaldehyde in concentrated sulphuric acid. Sulphur dioxide contaminant may be removed by a prior passage of the gas through a tower containing wetted limestone and after treatment with the formaldehyde/sulphuric acid mixture the gas may be passed through a further scrubber containing concentrated sulphuric acid to remove traces of formaldehyde. If the latter purification step is admitted the gas contains small quantities of formaldehyde or its oxidation product, formic acid, and this gas may be used in the production of dry ice or in the production of Seltzer water.
