Abstract
Burner gases are purified for the production of pure sulphuric acid by separating dust and then passing them through a washing apparatus, such as a tower in which they come in contact with water or dilute sulphuric acid, at such a rate that the vaporization and condensation occurring in the washer is not such as to remove the suspended matter from the gases, but only such as to increase the size of the suspended particles so that they can be readily separated in an electric precipitator. The suspended matter, particularly selenium, is thus obtained in a concentrated form in the precipitator instead of as a sludge in the washer. The sulphur trioxide produced catalytically from the purified gases is separated as sulphuric acid in a similar manner by passing the gases first through the washer and then through the electric precipitator. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 21147/07, 109,106, 119,236, 136,464, and 144,701.ALSO:Burner gases are purified for the production of pure sulphuric acid by separating dust, then passing through a washing apparatus such as a tower in which they come in contact with water or dilute sulphuric acid at such a rate that the vaporization and condensation occurring in the washer is not such as to remove the suspended matter from the gases but only such as to increase the size of the suspended particles so that they can be readily separated in a separate apparatus, preferably an electric precipitator. The suspended matter, particularly selenium is thus obtained in a concentrated form in the precipitator instead of as a sludge in the washer. The sulphur trioxide produced catalytically from the purified gases, is separated as sulphuric acid in a similar manner by passing the gases first through the washer and then through the electric precipitator.
