Abstract

Sulphur is removed from industrial gases and recovered by a cyclic process in which the gas is passed through an aqueous suspension of manganic oxide, sulphuretted hydrogen in the gas being decomposed with the formation of manganese sulphide and sulphur, which are removed by filtration. The moist mass so obtained is exposed to air to form manganese hydrate and sulphur. After oxidation, the mass is dried in warm air to convert the hydrate to oxide and the sulphur is extracted, e.g. with trichloroethylene, any solvent remaining being removed by heat and the oxide again used for gas purification. Specification 10186/88, [Class 90, Non-metallic elements], is referred to.
