280,947. Silica Gel Corporation, (Assignees of Miller, E. B., and Connolly, G. C.). Nov. 19, 1926, [Convention date]. Purifying processes.-Gases are freed from sulphur compounds by treatment with air or other oxidant in presence of a solid adsorbent carrying a metal oxide. The adsorbent is preferably a highly porous gel; suitable materials are silica gel impregnated with about 1 per cent of ferric or cupric oxide or both. The adsorbent may be mixed in suspension in a current of the gas mixture or the latter may be passed through layers of the adsorbent; in the latter case two layers are conveniently used heated respectively to 200-210‹ C. and 185-200‹ C. Where organic sulphur compounds are present a preliminary treatment, e.g. 450‹ C., is employed to convert these into hydrogen sulphide, which is oxidized to sulphur and water in the second stage. Sulphur dioxide formed may be removed by means of ammonia solution. Specifications 25976/06, [Class 90, Non-metallic elements], and 255,864, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], are referred to.
