Abstract

328,592. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Jan. 18, 1929. Purifying processes; materials for purifying.- Gases such as combustible gases, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, &c. are freed from phosphorus or phosphorus compounds by passing the gases together with oxygen, air, &c. over heated contact masses which cause catalytic oxidation of the phosphorus and combine with or absorb the phosphorus oxide which is formed. The contact masses contain as catalysts metals of the first, third, fourth, seventh, or eighth group of the periodic system, such as copper, aluminium, cerium, tin, titanium, manganese, or iron or oxides, hydroxides or other compounds of these metals, and as compounds to combine with or absorb the phosphorus oxides compounds of the elements of the first to the fourth groups, or the eighth group, or their compounds such as titanium dioxide, alumina, iron oxide, calcium oxide, or silica particularly in the form of pumice, quartz meal, fullers' earth, diatomite, and natural or artificial zeolites. Roasted pyrites, slag, ashes, &c. which contain both catalytic metal oxides and absorbent substances may be used. Specification 276,687, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], is referred to.
