Abstract
Gases containing acetylene, obtained by the treatment of carbonaceous substances in the electric arc, are freed from di-acetylene or other strongly colouring substances, e.g. substances containing oxygen or which are readily oxidizable or partly resinifiable, by passage over active porous masses such as active carbon or silica. Prior or subsequent to this treatment, the gases may be freed from cyanogen compounds, e.g. by washing with solutions of ferrous sulphate, caustic soda or potash. Impurities other than di-acetylene specified in examples are ethylene, allylene, butylene, isoprene and butadiene. The purified gas is suitable for catalytic conversion into acetaldehyde or acetic acid, e.g. by means of sulphuric acid solutions containing mercury.ALSO:Gases containing acetylene, obtained by the treatment of carbonaceous substances in the electric arc, are freed from di-acetylene or other strongly colouring substances e.g. substances containing oxygen or which are readily oxidizable or partly resinifiable, by passage over active porous masses such as active carbon or silica.
