Oxgenated organic compounds.-Gases such as the oxides of carbon and hydrogen intended for the catalytic production of oxygenated organic compounds are purified from iron carbonyl vapours by passing them and a body chemically reactive to iron carbonyl alternately over active absorbing material until the latter is saturated when it is revivified. Alternatively, the reactive body and the gases are passed together over the absorbent. The gases are mixed with air or hydrochloric acid gas and passed over a layer of active carbon, the iron carbonyl being decomposed into ferric oxide or chloride. The carbon is revivified by treatment with acid or by washing.
