Abstract

276,687. Gewerkschaft der Steinkohlenzeche Mont-Cenis. Aug. 30, 1926, [Convention date]. Methane and its homologues are obtained as by-products in a process in which hydrogen, or a mixture of gases containing hydrogen, for use in catalytic processes is freed from organic compounds of sulphur, phosphorus, and arsenic by passage at an elevated temperature and pressure over a catalyst comprising one or more metals, other than copper, having an atomic weight between 51 and 65, or one or more oxides of such metals; the catalyst is preferably precipitated on a carrier and may contain also an oxide or other compound of an alkali, alkaline earth, or earth metal. The treatment may be performed at a temperature of 200-500‹ C. under a pressure of 100 atmospheres with the use of a catalyst containing nickel and aluminium oxide. The treatment converts the impurities mentioned into methane or its homologues and readily absorbable inorganic compounds such as hydrogen sulphide. Such inorganic compounds are absorbed by alkalies &c., either in known manner or by the addition of the absorbents to the catalyst, while the hydrocarbons, being generally harmless in the processes for which the hydrogen is required. are allowed to remain in the product. To assist removal of the inorganic compounds formed inorganic substances such as an alkali nitrate or nitrite, lead chromate, barium nitrate, or manganese dioxide may also be added to the catalyst.
