Abstract
The product gas from a coal gasification process is contacted with a bed of barium compound and/or strontium compound hereby to reduce the HCl content. The barium compound may be barium sulphate and the strontium compound may be strontium sulphate.
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE TREATMENT OF GASES
This invention concerns improvements in or relating to the treatment of gases.
The combustion or gasification of a fossil fuel such as coal, releases alkali salts which are present in the product gases as either a condensed phase or a vapour phase. High alkali levels are -# > , #P undesirable particularly in view of their corrosive effect. The phase in which they occur will determine the method of their removal.
In the case of combustion gases, the alkalis are present principally as condensed phases, with low vapour phase concentrations, and can therefore be removed by filtration together with the particulate contaminants. However, when the alkalis are predominantly present as vapour species, it becomes necessary to react or adsorb them onto suitable 'getter' materials to effect their removal.
The gas produced from the gasification of coal contains not only a high level of alkalis but also a significantly high concentration of hydrogen chloride. Unfortunately, the 'gettering' reaction also produces HC1 and therefore the equilibrium of that reaction is displaced disadvantageously. The removal of HC1 before the gettering reaction would thus lead to more efficient alkali extraction from the product gas.
An object of the present invention is therefore to provide a method of treating gases whereby their hydrogen chloride content is reduced.
Accordingly the invention provides a method of treating gases including the step of contacting the gases with a barium compound and/or a strontium compound.
The gases to be treated by such contact are at an elevated temperature in the range for example of 8000C to 10000C and the barium compound and/or strontium compound will be employed either as a treatment bed which may be fixed or fluidised, or injected before a particulate filter.
The barium compound may be barium sulphate or carbonate and the strontium compound may be strontium sulphate or carbonate.
Materials naturally containing either one or both of barium and strontium compounds may be employed in the method of the invention.
The treatment bed or injected material may comprise the compound(s) only or in combination with a getter material to afford a single pass cleaning stage for the gases to be treated.
In an example of putting into experimental practice the method of the present invention, gas from a fluidised bed gasifier at a temperature of between 8000C and 10000C was passed through an efficient dust separator and thence through an alkali gettering reactor. The arrangement was such that a layer of barytes (barium sulphate) was interposed before the gettering material which was pyrophyllite. Whereas at the inlet, gas analysis showed a hydrogen chloride content of 414 vpm,at the outlet, the content had reduced to 21 vpm.
The use of barium sulphate in this experimental test then resulted in a reduction of HCl of 95%.
