Abstract

Carbon monoxide is absorbed from industrial gases containing it by means of a cuprous compound such as the oxide, sulphate or chloride suspended in sulphuric acid of 66 DEG B<\>ae. Both the carbon monoxide and the cuprous compound are liberated by heating, when the sulphuric acid is also regenerated and by the addition of water. It is advantageous to pass the gas under treatment and the cuprous suspension in countercurrent and also to effect the absorption of the carbon monoxide when it has become less concentrated, at a lower temperature. The carbon monoxide and hydrogen in water gas may be separated by the above-described process. The gases to be treated must be free from ethylene and acetylene and preferably also oxygen as these substances are absorbed by the cuprous compound. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited to the use of sulphuric acid of 66 DEG B<\>ae. strength. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
