Abstract
226,512. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Maude, A. H., Rodman, C. J., Styer, C. A., and WiL- harm, W.C.). Dec. 21, 1923, [Convention date]. Oil switches.-A mixture comprising essentially an electrolyte and a metal, preferably in molecular proportions, is used for removing oxygen from atmospheres containing it, particularly from the air drawn into electric transformers employing oil insulation. To the mixture may also be added water, an inert porous material such as kieselguhr, silica, cork dust, asbestos, or saw dust, a catalyst such as one of the forms of activated carbon, a substance such as calcium chloride, or mixtures thereof. In an example copper oxide scale is ground and mixed with kieselguhr and then reduced to metal by means of natural gas. After sifting, ammonium chloride, calcium. chloride, water, and active carbon are mixed therewith in an atmosphere of nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The sulphate and fluoride of ammonia are also mentioned as suitable electrolytes.
