Abstract
Concentrated or pure chlorine is obtained from a mixture, such as that resulting from the Deacon process, by exposing the mixture to the action of a powerful adsorbent such as activated carbon, and afterwards extracting the adsorbed chlorine by heating, exhaustion, or both. As moisture hinders adsorption, the gas mixture is dried, say by strong sulphuric acid, and the adsorbent is also dried. The first 25 per cent, or so, of the chlorine extracted from the carbon &c. is impure, and is re-treated, either alone or with the original mixture. A series of adsorption chambers may be worked on the counter-current principle; or the adsorbent may travel during both the adsorption and extraction stages.
