Abstract

1384562 Purifying combustible gas SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 24 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 13921/72 Heading C5E In a process for making H 2 - and CO- containing gas by partial oxidation of liquid fuels, e.g. liquid hydrocarbons, aqueous coal slurries or slurries of soot in oil, in which the gases are washed with water to remove solid particles and from the resulting suspension water is separated for recirculating to the washing zone, gases, e.g. H 2 S dissolved in the suspension or in the separated water are removed by stripping with a gas, e.g. air or steam. The quantity and/or temperature of the stripping gas is regulated to control the evaporation of water in the stripping zone to ensure a constant quantity is recycled to the washing zone, and additional heat may be supplied to the stripping zone. In an illustrated embodiment, the make gases traverse two washers in series in countercurrent to recirculated water, and the suspension, which leaves the first washer, traverses a soot-agglomeration unit (from which soot may be returned to the gas-making zone), and an ashremoving floatation chamber, the stripping zone preceding the unit or succeeding the chamber. Gases leaving the stripper traverse a condenser and the condensate is freed of combustible products in a burner.
