Abstract

In a process for the production of gas mixtures rich in hydrogen of the kind described in the parent Specification, in which the partial combustion of methane with oxygen takes place in a double shafted converter containing coke, the oxygen is diluted with a gas, or with a vapour such as water vapour, the reaction products of which with the coke do not constitute impurities in the resultant gas of high hydrogen content. A suitable diluent gas is a portion of the methane containing gas. The diluent gas may be supplied through nozzles adjacent to those supplying oxygen, or may be added to the oxygen in an antechamber.
