Abstract
In the production of gas rich in hydrogen by cracking hydrocarbon gases in an ignited fuel bed, the temperature of the fuel bed is in the neighbourhood of 1200 DEG C. so that the decomposition of methane is a surface effect. The temperature of the fuel bed is regulated by steaming the fuel bed, some blue water gas being formed and mixing with the "broken down gas" to give a reformed gas containing up to 90 per cent of hydrogen. Specifications 319,769, 329,598, and 331,138, [all in Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], are referred to.
