Abstract

Oils poor in hydrogen content, i.e., containing less than 14,5 gr. of hydrogen per 100 gs. carbon, are cracked without the formation of coke and gases by mixing therewith oils rich in hydrogen, (i.e. containing more than 15 gr. of hydrogen per 100 gs. carbon) and passing the mixture mixed with finely divided catalysts continuously through a heating zone maintained above 400 DEG C., and preferably between 450 and 600 DEG C. The oils rich in hydrogen and the catalysts may be added in stages to the oils poor in hydrogen and the reaction may be carried out in presence of hydrogenating gases preferably those obtained in the reaction which are enriched with hydrogen and recirculated. A middle oil of ,895 sp. gr., aniline point 32, and a hydrogen content of 12,8 gs. per 100 gs. carbon is mixed with 20 per cent of a benzine fraction boiling between 100-210 DEG C. having an aniline point of 50 DEG , sp. gr. ,808, octave number 56 and hydrogen content 16,4 grs., and the mixture is mixed with 1 per cent of a catalyst comprising lignite coke containing 30 per cent iron carbonyl and passed through a reaction chamber at 475 DEG C. A 38 per cent yield of a benzine having an octane rating of 73 is obtained.
