Abstract

Solid fuels are converted into water gas, from which by known processes, methane-containing gases and benzine hydrocarbons are produced. The methane-containing gases are converted into illuminating gas and aromatic hydrocarbons by being heated once or a number of times for a short period to temperatures above 1000 DEG C., according to the process of Specification 316,126 [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. An antiknock motor fuel is obtained by mixing the benzine hydrocarbons first obtained with the aromatic hydrocarbons obtained during the heat treatment of the methane-containing gases. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the yield of benzol or tar hydrocarbons is increased if to the methane be added higher homologues such as ethane and propane or substances of the ethylene or acetylene series. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Solid fuels are converted into water gas, from which by known processes, methane-containing gases and benzine hydrocarbons are produced. The methane-containing gases are converted into illuminating gas by being heated once or a number of times for a short period to temperatures above 1000 DEG C., according to the process of Specification 316,126, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], after previous concentration if necessary, and with the simultaneous recovery of aromatic hydrocarbons. The use of methane for supplying gas to distant points of consumption where the methane is converted to a combustible gas is also described. The regulation of the calorific value of a gas by withdrawing part of the methane, submitting it to the above process and adding the treated gas to the untreated portion is described. It is stated that all the aforesaid applications of gaseous mixtures obtained by splitting up methane or gaseous mixtures containing methane are also suitable for gaseous mixtures obtained by splitting up ethylene and acetylene or their homologues, or by similarly directed treatment of such gaseous mixtures as contain these compounds in association with or in place of methane. The steps of the process are illustrated by diagram. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
