Abstract

A petroleum residue fraction containing vanadium in elemental or combined form is rendered suitable for use as a fuel for gas turbine engines by a process which comprises intimately mixing it with a solvent consisting of one or more paraffin hydrocarbons having 3-7 carbon atoms per molecule (the solvent containing not more than 0.5 per cent by weight of aromatics and being substantially free from naphthenes) and thereafter separating the solution so obtained from the material insoluble in the solvent. The solvent may be stripped from the solution and recycled for the treatment of fresh feed. The solvent may be normal hexane, normal heptane, mixtures thereof, or mixtures of paraffin hydrocarbons containing at least 50 per cent by weight of normal heptane and/or hexane. The vanadium content of the petroleum residue fraction before treatment may be at least 0.02-0.03 per cent by weight and the fraction may constitute not more than 30 per cent by volume of the crude petroleum from which it was derived. The amount of solvent used may be at least five times and preferably about eight times the volume of residual petroleum fuel treated. The latter after treatment may be blended with other fuels. In an example, a 25.2 per cent by volume residue fraction derived from a Middle East crude petroleum oil and having a vanadium content of 0.0307 per cent by weight is treated with 8 times its volume of propane in a countercurrent tower operated at 150 DEG F. tower top and 110 DEG F. tower base. The treated residue constitutes 36 per cent by weight of the feedstock and contains no vanadium. The deposition of scale on the blades of gas turbines by fuels treated according to the invention is said to be eliminated or greatly reduced.
