Abstract
A motor fuel comprises a blend of (i) an aromatics concentrate obtained from a catalytic reformate and containing toluene and other aromatic hydrocarbons with the exception of benzene; (ii) an isopentane fraction consisting of either, pure isopentane or, a hydrocarbon mixture containing 5 carbon atoms per molecule and not more than 50 per cent by weight of n-pentane; and (iii) an isohexane fraction containing a mixture of paraffinic hydrocarbons with 6 carbon atoms per molecule, and not more than 50 per cent by weight of n-hexane. In an example, a fuel comprises (i) 50 parts by volume of a concentrate extracted from a reformate fraction with a boiling point greater than 85 DEG C. and derived from a straight-run naphtha with a boiling range between 93 DEG and 185 DEG C.; with (ii) 24.2 parts by volume of an isohexane fraction being a straight-run fraction boiling between 45-65 DEG C.; and (iii) 25.8 parts by volume of an isopentane fraction boiling between 26.5 DEG and 28.5 DEG C. obtained by fractional distillation of a mixture of a light reformate and a straight-run gasoline. The aromatics concentrate may include ortho, meta and paraxylene and ethyl benzene by separating it from a reformate boiling between 105 DEG C. and 180 DEG to 220 DEG C. The vapour pressure of the blend may be increased by the addition of a minor proportion of n- and/or iso-butane. Anti-knock additives, such as tetra-ethyl lead and other additives may also be included in the blend.
