Abstract

309,992. Lewis, G. C. April 19, 1928, [Convention date]. Hydrocarbons. - Free carbon is obtained by incomplete combustion of a gas containing hydrocarbons, substantially the whole of which are those gaseous at ordinary temperatures and pressures and which may contain 3 per cent or 4 per cent but not more than 15 per cent of free hydrogen, to which is added a further amount of free hydrogen. The percentage of free hydrogen added before the gas is burned varies with the percentage of combined hydrogen present, and the quality and quantity of the carbon to be produced, but it will, in general, be 15 to 70 per cent. This free hydrogen can be added in any desired manner, or it may be liberated from the hydrocarbons in the gas by cracking treatment. If the original gas is previously heated under suitable conditions, benzene, toluene, naphthalene, anthracene, &c. will be formed and, if desired, may be separated out in advance of the burner, but, in any case, the percentage of free hydrogen in the residual gas will be increased. The gas may be burnt in contact with a cold surface, or in an atmosphere deficient in combustion-supporting constituents. Specification 309,488 is referred to.
