Abstract

Bromine derivatives of gaseous or liquid unsaturated hydrocarbons of the ethylene and acetylene series are produced by introducing the hydrocarbon in finely divided form into an aqueous solution of bromine such as is produced in the manufacture of bromine. To cause rapid separation of the bromine compound, some of the product to be made may be added to the aqueous bromine solution. In an example, ethylene or acetylene is passed up a tower containing Raschig rings or the like in counter-current to an aqueous solution containing 0/m13 per cent. of bromine.
