Abstract
Hydroperoxides are obtained by the aerial oxidation of hydrocarbons, for example sulphur-and aromatic-free kerosine, paraffin wax, white oils, white spirits and paraffin-enriched fractions obtained from paraffin-containing materials by solid adduct formation with urea or thiourea. The peroxide-containing material may be concentrated by extraction with a selective solvent In one example 2 kilograms of kerosine are charged into a glass vessel, with 1 cc. of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide as oxidation initiator, and air-blown at 240 DEG C. for three hours. The product is neutralized with sodium or potassium hydroxide and the oily layer washed with water, dried with anhydrous sodium sulphate and the oil then extracted with anhydrous methanol. Methanol is removed under partial vacuum from the concentrated hydroperoxide solution. The Provisional Specification refers also to organic peroxides in general.ALSO:Mineral oil fractions containing sulphur compounds are purified by reacting at, for example, 50-180 DEG C. with an organic hydroperoxide under conditions such that oxidation products of the sulphur compounds are formed. A specified hydroperoxide is tertiary butyl hydroperoxide. Mixtures of hydroperoxides may also be used; these may be obtained by aerial oxidation of hydrocarbons, for example, sulphur- and aromatic-free kerosine, paraffin wax, white oils, white spirits and paraffin-enriched fractions obtained from paraffin-containing materials by solid adduct formation with urea or thiourea. The peroxide-containing material may be concentrated by extraction with a selective solvent such as methanol. Removal of sulphur compounds from the treated oil may be effected by adsorption, distillation or by extraction with methanol, aqueous methanol, aqueous acetone, sulphuric acid or caustic soda solution. The treatment of gas oil is described in the examples. The Provisional Specification refers also to organic peroxides in general.
