Abstract

Detergent mixtures of alkyl aryl sulphonates and monoalkyl sulphates are produced by treating a petroleum fraction containing benzene, alkyl benzene and olefines having 8-18 carbon atoms at 5 DEG -15 DEG C. with sulphuric acid to alkylate the aromatic substances and sulphate the excess olefine, treating the resulting crude alkylate after the acid phase consisting mainly of monoalkyl sulphates has been separated out with sulphuric acid and/or sulphur trioxide to form alkyl aryl sulphonates and adding to the resulting sulphonate a quantity of the secondary alkyl sulphates prepared by neutralization and extraction of the said acid phase. Compositions are described comprising in addition to the essential ingredients sodium sulphate, polyphosphates and carboxymethyl cellulose.ALSO:In a process for the production of mixtures of alkyl aryl sulphonates and monoalkyl sulphates which are suitable as detergents (see Group III), a petroleum fraction containing benzene, alkyl benzene and olefines with 8-18 carbon atoms is treated at 5 DEG C.-15 DEG C. with sulphuric acid to alkylate the aromatic substances and sulphate the excess olefine, the resulting crude alkylate, after the acid phase consisting mainly of monoalkyl sulphates has been separated out, is treated with sulphuric acid and/or sulphur trioxide to form alkyl aryl sulphonates and to the resulting sulphonates is added a quantity of the secondary alkyl sulphates prepared by neutralisation and extraction of the said acid phase. Dialkyl sulphates also produced in the first step of the process are converted to monoalkyl sulphates by treatment with caustic alkali. Suitable starting materials specified include mixtures of benzene and gasoil obtained from thermal cracking of petroleum comprising aromatic constituents and petrol-gasoil fractions distilling between 70 DEG C. and 240 DEG C. Such fractions may be completed by addition of aromatics or olefins where necessary. Examples are furnished in which benzine-gasoil fractions and crude cracking benzene of boiling range 70 DEG C.-240 DEG C. are employed as starting materials.
