Abstract

Oxy-compounds of the naphthalene series are prepared by sulphonating a hydrocarbon of the naphthalene series with an excess of sulphuric acid and subjecting the sulphonation product to alkali fusion without removing the excess of sulphuric acid. Any starting material which is present in the sulphonation mixture may be wholly or partly removed, e.g. by steam distillation. When naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid is made by sulphonating naphthalene at a high temperature at least a part of the naphthalene-1-sulphonic acid formed as a by-product may be split up into naphthalene and sulphuric acid by the steam treatment. The sulphonation mixture may be poured directly, or after dilution with water, into the alkali melt. Examples are given of the preparation of 2-naphthol from naphthalene and of 2-methyl-6-oxynaphthalene from 2-methylnaphthalene. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the treatment of aromatic compounds generally and includes examples of the preparation of phenol and cresol from benzene and toluene, respectively. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
