Abstract
The wetting and impregnating power of alkali lye, particularly for mercerizing yarns and fabrics, is increased by the addition of small quantities of one or more lower phenols soluble in the lye, together with one or more higher phenols containing at least three carbon atoms in an aliphatic side chain. Small quantities of hydrogenated aromatic substances, aliphatic or aromatic alcohols, or mixtures of the same may also be added. The following mixtures are specified: cresol and carvacrol; xylenol and thymol or carvacrol; cresol, xylenol and carvacrol; cresol, carvacrol, methyl cyclohexanol and butyl alcohol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of mixtures of phenols with phenol homologues or derivatives in general, including amino, sulpho, chloro and oxymethyl derivatives and sulphonic esters of phenols, and mixtures of phenols with aromatic sulphonic acids. The following mixtures are specified, in addition to those mentioned above: cresol and xylenol; cresol or xylenol and isopropylnaphthalene sulphonic acid; xylenol and p-cumene sulphonic acid; and cresol, carvacrol, methylhexanol, butyl alcohol, and p-cumene sulphonic acid. Naphthols and alkylated naphthols are also mentioned as suitable phenols. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
