Abstract
Emulsifying agents are obtained when aromatic hydroxy compounds substituted by at least one alkyl or cycloalkyl radicle with at least four carbon atoms are treated with di or polyethyleneglycolhalohydrins. In an example, 4-sec. alkylcresols, obtained from o-cresol and olefines having 8 to 14 carbon atoms in the molecule are condensed with tetraethyleneglycolmonochlorhydrin in the presence of perchloric acid. The use of the following starting materials is mentioned: butylphenol, hexylphenol, amylcresol, dibutylphenol, octylcresol, decylcresol, sec. dodecylcresol, oleylphenol, tributylphenol, hexylnaphthol, decylresorcinol, cyclohexylcresol, 4-butylcyclohexylcresol, hexahydrobenzylphenol and decahydronaphthylcresol. Reference is made to the use in the manufacture of the emulsifying agents of components containing nitro, carbonyl, sulpho, ether, ester and halogen atoms. The Provisional Specification mentions the use of phenols, resorcinol, naphthols, hydroxydiphenyl and hydroanthracene as components.ALSO:Aromatic hydroxy compounds substituted by at least one alkyl or cycloalkyl radicle with at least four carbon atoms are treated with di or polyethyleneglycolhalohydrins. In an example, 4-sec. alkylcresols obtained from o-cresol and olefines having 8 to 14 carbon atoms in the molecule are condensed with tetraethylene glycolmonochlorhydrin in the presence of perchloric acid. The use of the following starting materials is mentioned: butylphenol, hexylphenol, amylcresol, dibutylphenol, octylcresol, decylcresol, sec. dodecylcresol, oleylphenol, tributylphenol, hexylnaphthol, decylresorcinol, cyclohexylcresol, 4-butylcyclohexylcresol, hexahydrobenzylphenol and decahydronaphthylcresol. Acid combining agents facilitate the reaction. The products have wetting, emulsifying and washing properties and may be used in the textile, leather, paper and rubber industries. The use of alkylated or cycloalkylated aromatic hydroxy compounds containing nitro, carbonyl, sulpho, ether, ester and halogen atoms is mentioned. The Provisional Specification comprises the condensation of di- and poly-ethyleneglycolhalohydrins with any aromatic hydroxycompound, e.g. phenols, resorcinol, naphthols, hydroxydiphenyl and hydroxyanthracene.
