Abstract

Resins are obtained from hexamethylene tetramine and the condensation products from alkyl ethers of phenols containing unsaturated substituents with phenols free from such substituents. The latter may be mono- or polyhydric, phenol, naphthols, anthranols and their homologues being specified. The alkyl ethers may be of the constituents of cashew or marking nut shell liquid of cardanol or urushiol or of various alkenyl- or cyclohexenyl-substituted phenols; eugenol, isoeugenol, safrole and isosafrole are also specified; also ethers of hydroxy-indenes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to alkyl ethers, but mentions ethers in general. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Condensation products are obtained from alkyl ethers of phenols containing unsaturated substituents and phenols free from such substituents, in the presence of a cationoid condensing agent under conditions such that the latter does not enter into reaction with the components. Suitable condensing agents are sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, zinc chloride, aluminium chloride, boron trifluoride, benzene sulphonic acid and hydrochloric acid. The phenols used may be mono- or poly-hydric, phenol, naphthols, anthranols and their homologues such as cresols and xylenols being mentioned. Specified ethers are the alkyl ethers of the constituents of cashew nut shell liquid (e.g. cardol, anacardic acid), and of marking nut shell liquid; alkyl ethers of caridanol and urushiol, engenol and isoeugenol, safrole and isosafrole, ethers of phenol and its homologues substituted by alkenyl or cyclohexenyl radicals, ethers of hydroxy-indenes. Specified alkyl ethers are the methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl and amyl ethers. Examples are given of the condensation process and the conversion p of the product into an ether. Sulphonated products may be produced from the condensation products by normal methods to yield wetting agents and ingredients for dye and perfume compositions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to alkyl ethers as starting materials, but mentions ethers in general. It is also stated that the condensation and sulphonation reactions may occur simultaneously, and further examples are given of the preparation of sulphonated products by the one-step and two-step processes. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Wetting agents for the treatment of textiles are obtained by sulphonation of the condensation products from alkyl ethers of phenols containing unsaturated substituents and phenols free from such substituents. The latter may be mono- or poly-hydric, phenol, naphthols, anthranols and their homologues being specified. The alkyl ethers may be ethers of the constituents of cashew or marking nut shell liquid of cardanol or urushiol or of various alkenyl- or cyclohexenyl-substituted phenols; eugenol, isoeugenol, safrole and isosafrole are also specified, also ethers of hydroxy-indenes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to alkyl ethers, but mentions ethers in general. Examples are given of the preparation of specific compounds. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
