Abstract

Aromatic monohydroxy compounds or their derivatives, such as ethers are condensed with hydroaromatic compounds containing at least one halogen atom and at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule, in the presence of di- or trivalent base metals. In examples, o-cresol is condensed with a mixture of monoand dichlordecahydronaphthalene, dichlordecahydronaphthalene and with abietylchloride, --the latter being obtained from resin alcohol and thionylchloride. Granulated zinc is used for the condensation and the o-cresol may be replaced by xylenols, naphthols or hydroxyanthracenes or phenanthrenes. Brominated hydroaromatic compounds may be employed and hydroaromatic compounds containing iodine are mentioned. Specified hydroxy compounds and derivatives are ethylphenols, thymol, carvacrol, hydroxydiphenyls, anisol, phenetol and diphenyl ether. Magnesium and cadmium are condensing agents also mentioned. Specification 449,607 is referred to. Examples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of products obtained by condensing monochlordecahydronaphthalene with anisol, diphenylether and hydroxyanthracene.
