Abstract

Inner anhydrides of mercurized phenols are prepared by dissolving a mercurized phenol in sodium hydroxide solution and treating the solution with carbon dioxide to precipitate the anhydride. Alternatively molten phenols may be treated at low temperature with mercuric oxide. The anhydrides may be dissolved in phenols, without cleavage of the anhydride bond, for use as seed disinfectants. Anhydrides specified are those of hydroxyphenyl (or tolyl) mercuri hydroxide, of mercurized 1.3.5-xylenol, and of mercurized amylphenols, diphenols, phenylphenols, cyclohexylphenols, chlorphenols and their homologues, nitrophenols and their homologues, and hydroquinone and other polyhydroxy benzenes.ALSO:Seed disinfectants to be used for wet or dry treatment comprise an inner anhydride of a mercurized phenol dissolved in a phenol. Examples relate to the anhydride of hydroxy phenyl-, or tolyl-, mercuri hydroxide dissolved in phenol, and to the anhydride of mercurized 1.3.5-xylenol dissolved in 1.3.5-xylenol. The liquid preparations may be diluted with water or used to impregnate talcum or kaolin. Other inner anhydrides specified are those of mercurized xylenols, amylphenols, diphenols, phenyl phenols, cyclohexylphenols and their homologues, nitro phenols and their homologues and hydroquinone and other polyhydroxy benzenes. Other solvent phenols are the higher phenol homologues, chlorophenols and diphenols. Other fungicidal compounds may be added. The inner anhydrides may be prepared by dissolving mercurized phenols in sodium hydroxide solution and treating the solution with carbon dioxide to precipitate the anhydrides, or by treating phenols with mercuric oxide at a low temperature.
