Abstract

Mesitol (2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl phenol) or 2 : 6-xylenol is recovered in a relatively concentrated form from a respective close-boiling phenolic fraction by subjecting the fraction to fractional azeotropic distillation with water. The distillate fraction containing the desired phenol is then crystallized to recover the desired phenol in pure form, if necessary after this fraction has first been dry distilled to remove undesired phenols. The Specification describes the recovery of 2 : 6-xylenol from a cresol fraction and of mesitol from a fraction boiling at 220-225 DEG C.ALSO:Mesitol (2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl phenol) or 2 : 6-xylenol is recovered from a respective close-boiling phenolic fraction by subjecting the fraction to fractional azeatropic distillation with water. The distillate fraction containing the desired phenol is then crystallized to recover the desired phenol in pure form, if necessary after this fraction has first been dry distilled to remove undesired phenols. The Specification describes the recovery of 2 : 6-xylenol from a cresol fraction and of mesitol from a fraction boiling at 220 DEG -225 DEG C., the fractionation being performed in a column having about 15 theoretical plates.
