Abstract

An aqueous composition for proofing textiles, wood and similar materials comprises a water-soluble salt of an aromatic hydroxy compound possessing anti-mildew properties and a water-soluble bactericidal quaternary ammonium compound, both maintained in solution by means of a surface-active agent which is a condensation product of an alkylene oxide with an organic compound containing a hydrocarbon group and an active hydrogen atom or an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a condensation product of formaldehyde and an aromatic sulphonic acid. Specified aromatic hydroxy compounds include salicylanilide, trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, 2, 21-dihydroxy-3, 5,31, 51-tetrachlorodiphenyl methane and 2,21-dihydroxy-3,5,6,31,51, 61-hexachlorodiphenyl-methane, used as their ammonium or alkali metal salts. Specified quaternary ammonium compounds include cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and cetyl pyridinium bromide : the chlorides and methosulphates may also be used. The alkylene oxide condensation product may be formed by reacting an alkylene oxide such as ethylene or propylene oxide with fatty alcohols or acids, wool grease alcohols or acids, polyhydroxy compounds partially esterified with fatty acids, long chain alkyl phenols, or long chain amino, amido or mercapto compounds. The second group of surface-active agents may be obtained by condensing an aromatic sulphonic acid with formaldehyde or by sulphonating a formaldehyde-aromatic compound condensate. Salts of condensates of formaldehyde with a naphthalene sulphonic acid, a methylnaphthalene sulphonic acid or a tetrahydronaphthalene sulphonic acid are preferred. In an example cotton fabric is padded in an aqueous solution containing sodium pentachlorophenate, cetylpyridinium bromide, and a fatty alcoholethylene oxide condensate.
