291,474. Tootal Broadhurst Lee Co., Ltd., Foulds, R. P., Marsh, J. T., and Wood, F. C. Dec. 1, 1926. Phenol-formaldehyde condensation products are produced, from formaldehyde and phenol or a substituted phenol such as a sulphurized or a halogenated phenol, for example, p-bromphenol or o-chlorphenol, strong acid, caustic alkali, potassium carbonate, pyridine, or naphthalene sulphonic acid being used as the condensing agent for the intermediate and final products. Sulphurized phenols or reducing agents such as formaldehyde sulphoxylate compounds may be used to prevent the formation of colour. The earlier Provisional Specification describes also the use of trichloracetic acid or its sodium salt with phenol and formaldehyde. Specification 291,473 is referred to.
