Abstract

The m : m<1>-dicresylsulphone obtainable in known manner from m-cresolsulphonic acid, or a mixture of dioxydiphenylsulphones containing that sulphone, is treated in an alkaline medium with formaldehyde and a sulphite, and the product is separated by acidification and then treated in an acid medium with an aromatic sulphonic acid and formaldehyde, as described in the parent Specification. Examples are given in which the sulphone from m-cresol or crude cresol is heated with aqueous caustic soda, formaldehyde, and sodium sulphite, and the product, after separation by acidification, is heated with formaldehyde and crude naphthalenesulphonic acid.
