Abstract
Artificial silk is produced from viscose which is clarified by the addition at any stage in the production of the viscose of a small amount, i.e. less than 2 per cent, of a sulphonated fatty acid, fat or fatty oil having a high content of organically bound sulphuric acid, the amount of non-sulphonated fat or fatty oil in the sulphonated product being so small that it shows no turbidity with an excess of lye. The sulphonated products may be obtained in known manner by sulphonation with an excess of sulphuric acid in the presence of acid chlorides or anhydrides; liberated glycerine need not be removed. In an example, 0,1 per cent or less of the product sold under the registered Trade Mark "Praestabit" is added to the viscose. The addition may be made to the soda cellulose or to the carbon disulphide used for xanthogenation. Enhanced results may be obtained by the addition of a small amount of an alkylated aromatic sulphonic acid, e.g. iso-butyl-naphthalene-sulphonic acid.
