Abstract
Artificial silk having filaments of from 6 to less than 1 denier are produced by spinning in the normal manner by means of acid salt baths, a normally ripened viscose having a low cellulose content (not higher than 6 per cent), to which an excess of carbon disulphide has been added or which has been prepared by the application of an excess of carbon disulphide. The normal amount of carbon disulphide is regarded as 45 per cent of the weight of the cellulose, and it is now proposed to use an excess amounting, for example, to from 9 to 18 per cent of the weight of the cellulose, but a still larger excess may be used by lowering the cellulose content of the solution. In examples, (1) to 1000 parts of viscose made in the normal manner and diluted to a cellulose content of 5,7 per cent, there is added 7 parts of carbon disulphide. The product is ripened and spun in the usual way; (2) normal viscose is diluted with caustic soda lye so as to contain 4,1 per cent of cellulose and 5,5 per cent of caustic soda, mixed with 1,7 per cent of carbon disulphide, ripened, and spun in the usual way; (3) a viscose is prepared in the normal manner, but during the sulphidation or during solution, an excess of about 18 per cent of carbon disulphide is added, and the product, which contains 5,0 per cent of cellulose and 5,2 per cent of caustic soda is ripened and spun into the usual spinning bath. Specifications 15752/10, 135,205, 189,973, 212,865, 220,934, 253,953, 314,504, 319,243, [all in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 350,397 are referred to.
